Your Rights As A Borrower

As a student loan borrower you have rights. Even though you probably feel as if you are being held hostage by your lender, you actually have more rights than you think. The fact of the matter is that since most borrowers do not know about these rights, they never really think twice about what they can do for them. Although you should have a relatively easy time taking out and repaying a student loan, you should always know your rights just in case something gets a bit out of whack along the way.

Right to Defer

Many borrowers are unaware of the fact that if they go back to school after graduating that they can defer their student loans. In other words, say that you have one student loan that you took out so that you could obtain your undergraduate degree. A few months after you graduate this money is going to come due. But if you go to graduate school, you can defer your student loan. Obviously, this is something that you will want to do because you probably will not have enough money to make payments. There are different deferment rules for different types of student loans. So again, you need to know all of your rights.

Right for Accurate Information

You have the right to obtain information from your lender whenever need be. By law, a lender is required to send you a statement during each payment period. This will include information on how much you owe, how much you have paid so far, etc. If for any reason you are not receiving these notices, you should touch base with your lender. This is your right, and you need to have this information so that you can proceed with the proper payments, etc.

Even though the lender may feel as if they did you a favor, you still have rights as a student loan borrower. You need to know what these rights are so that you do not get off track when repaying your loans. There is plenty of information on these rights online, and of course, you can also get a run down from your lender.
