Know Your Student Loan Rights

As a student you may need to borrow money in order to get through college. Although you may think that this is easy enough, you need to know your rights in order to make sure that you are not taken advantage of. Luckily, learning your student loan rights is not as hard as you may think. There is plenty of information on this topic, and once you have a good understanding you should never have to worry about somebody taking advantage of you.

The Right for Timely Information

Information regarding your student loan must be given to you by your lender in a timely manner. This is enforced as part of the Student Borrower Bill of Rights Act. Your lender is required to send you a statement during every payment period. And in addition to receiving this statement, it must include information such as: the principal that was borrowed, the balance at that time, the interest rate, the expected interest over the term of the loan, the amount of interest that you have paid, and much more.

Right to Affordable Payments

Many people find it difficult to believe that the Student Borrower Bill of Rights Act sets a limit on how much a lender can charge a borrower each month. By knowing this you should never feel as if you are being charged too much. If you do, you might as well check it out with your lender. Even if you end up being wrong, it is better safe to be sorry when it comes to repaying your student loans.

As you can see, just because you owe money on your student loans does not mean that you have no rights. In fact, you need to make sure that you know your student loan rights so you are never taken advantage of. When you know your rights as a borrower you will have a much easier time paying back your loans. And since paying back loans can be a pain in the neck, the easier the better.
